Students in 2G class are benefiting from having virtual English teaching interns assist in their Oral Communication classes. The English teaching interns are native English-speaking University students from Australia. Mostly, by way of Zoom, they observe the 2G Oral Communication classes every week, and sometimes they participate in a lesson and talk with students in the class. Also, they conduct their own extracurricular class held from 15:30 – 16:10 on Wednesdays and Fridays every week. They are given training and feedback by the 2G English Oral Communication instructor. Students sign up in advance to join the sessions, and a maximum of five students are allowed in each session so as to allow each of them a lot of talk time. During these sessions, they have conversation practice as well as practice for speeches, presentations, learning and using new vocabulary, reinforcing lessons in class, or practice for speaking and Eiken tests. Students’ test scores have increased since joining these extra sessions.
One of our past virtual interns in January and February 2022, Ms. Emilie Hanckel, a University student at Flinders University in Adelaide Australia, came to Tokyo recently to study, and she visited the 2G class to conduct a surprise lesson in person. During the lesson, she led communication activities and talked with students about various subjects, and got them to communicate about things they have been doing. The students were happy to see her in person and got motivated to talk a lot with her.
