高校１年グローバル留学コースの生徒たちがカナダでの留学生活始めて約２ヵ月が経ちました。生徒たちからの留学報告第２弾です。
It has already been two months since I came to Canada to study abroad, and a lot has happened during this time. There have been many enjoyable events, such as my host father’s birthday, Thanksgiving, and Halloween. However, the most memorable experience for me was the province-wide teachers' strike that took place in Alberta. I heard that the last time a strike like this happened was about twenty years ago, so I was quite surprised and confused when I suddenly couldn’t go to school. Fortunately, since I had already made some friends after school started in September, the strike turned out to be a good opportunity to spend time with them outside of school. Some of them were friends I was meeting for the first time outside of class, and I feel that we became even closer through the time we spent together during the strike. I also passed the highly competitive tryouts for the hip-hop crew, and even during the strike, my teammates and I continued to practice at the recreation center near our school. Normally, we practice once a week, but during the strike, we took advantage of the extra time and practiced up to three times a week for two hours each session. As a result, our team’s bonds became much stronger, and I grew much closer to my teammates.
There are only two tenth-grade students in the crew, including me, and all the others are older. Still, everyone has been so kind and welcoming, and I truly appreciate how warmly they treat me. I want to enjoy my study abroad life while also growing in many different ways.(カナダに留学してから、あっという間に二ヶ月が過ぎました。この二ヶ月の間には、ホストファザーの誕生日やセンクスギビング、ハロウィンなど楽しいことがたくさんありました。その中でも私にとって最も印象的だったのは、アルバータ州全体で起こったストライキです。前回このようなストライキがあったのは約20年前だそうで、突然学校に行けなくなったときはとても戸惑いました。しかし、9月から始まった学校生活の中で、すでに何人かの友達ができていたため、この期間はカナダでできた新しい友達と出かける良いチャンスにもなりました。中には、初めて学校の外で会う友達もいて、ストライキ中に一緒に過ごしたことで、以前よりも仲が深まったように感じます。また、私は倍率の高いヒップホップクルーのトライアウトに合格し、ストライキ中も学校の近くにあるレクリエーションセンターでチームメイトと練習を続けていました。通常は週に1回の練習でしたが、ストライキをきっかけに多いときで週3回、2時間ずつ練習を重ねました。そのおかげでチームの絆も深まり、以前より断然仲良くなりました。ヒップホップクルーの中では、10年生は私を含めて2人しかおらず、他のメンバーは全員年上です。それでも、皆とても優しく接してくれて、ありがたいことにとても可愛がってもらっています。これからの留学生活を楽しみつつもしっかりと様々な面で成長していきたいと思っています。)
4G students have already spent two months living in Canada and we are entering our third month now. I was initially confused by the different culture, customs, and values, but as time has passed, I have gradually got used to life here. I am trying to make friends at school, join club activities, and spend time with our host families through various events. Our school is called Mother Margaret Mary Catholic High School, and since all the initials are the same, everyone affectionately calls it “MMM.” Many local students attend this school, so there are no classes specially designed for international students. However, that is actually one of the good points for our school, as it gives us the opportunity to make lots of local friends. When Halloween came, everyone dressed up in costumes and came to school. A huge ghost-shaped balloon was displayed in the hallway, and on Halloween, the school even gave out free cookies! It was such a fun and memorable experience that I could only have here. At my school, I belong to the cross-country team and the curling team. When people hear “cross-country,” they often imagine skiing, but I’m part of the track and field cross-country team. Since it’s a long-distance running sport, it was very tiring at first, but after adjusting my form little by little, I’m now able to join in races and challenge myself to improve my ranking. As for curling, I had never tried it before, so even just standing on the ice was difficult for me at first. However, I’m determined to keep practicing and get better step by step.Over the past two months, I can clearly feel that my English skills have improved. I’ll continue to study hard and make the most of my time here, enjoying every part of my life in Canada.(私たち４Gの生徒は今、はや二ヶ月カナダで生活し、三ヶ月目に入っています。最初は違う文化、習慣、そして価値観に戸惑い、ぎごちない部分もありましたが、時間が経つにつれ学校に友達ができたり、部活に参加したり、ホストファミリーといろんなアクティビティに参加したりなど、現地での生活に馴染んできています。私たちの学校の名前はMother Margret Marry Catholic High Schoolといい、文字の最初が全部同じなので、みんな親しみを込めて「MMM」と呼んでいます。私たちの学校は現地の人がたくさん通っていて、それ故に留学生専用の授業がほとんどないです。しかしそこがチャームポイントで、留学生だけではなく現地の友達もたくさん作れました。ハロウィンになるとみんな仮装して学校に来たり、学校に大きい幽霊のバルーンが設置されたり、当日には無料のクッキーがもらえたりなど！現地のでしか体験できないこともたくさんありました。私は運動部のクロスカントリー部とカーリング部に所属しています。クロスカントリーというとほとんどの人がスキーを想像してしまいがちですが、私はクロスカントリーの陸上競技部に入部しています。長距離走る競技なので最初は疲れましたが、フォームをちょっとずつ調整し、今では大会にでて順位を競い合っています。カーリングは一回も体験したことがなく、今は氷の上に立つことでさえ困難です。ですがしっかり練習を重ね、上達していきたいと思います。この二ヶ月の間、自分がはっきりとわかるほどに英語力が上達しています。引き続き勉強に励み、そして現地での生活を楽しんでいきたいです。)
